A word from our leadership 💬

Md Selim Hosain
Md Selim HosainPresident

Assalamu alaikum. It is the honour of my life to serve the Sitakund family in Britain as your President. This Samitee was built on a simple promise — that wherever we are in the UK, no one from Sitakund stands alone. Over the next two years, your new committee will work to keep that promise: more support for our families, more for our young people, and more for those in need back home. My door is always open — this organisation belongs to every one of you.

Md Raihan Uddin Chowdhury (Titu)
Md Raihan Uddin Chowdhury (Titu)General Secretary

Eight years ago we started with a handful of families and a big dream. Today SSUK is a home away from home — and we are only getting started. As General Secretary, my focus is simple: stay organised, stay transparent, and make it easy for every member to take part, from Leicester to London and beyond. Join us on 12 July as we begin this new chapter together — bring your family, and bring your ideas.

Voices & stories 📝

Articles drawn from our community magazines — on our roots in Sitakund, our heritage, and the people who built SSUK.

How it began

Our founding story

In 2018, a small group of dedicated Sitakund families living across the UK came together with a simple idea: to keep their community connected — to each other, to their culture, and to home. They first formed an 11-member advisory committee, which soon grew into a full executive committee, and Sitakund Samitee UK was born. The organisation was registered with Companies House in 2019 and formally inaugurated on 23 June 2019 before H.E. Saida Muna Tasneem, Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK.

In the years since, SSUK has grown into far more than an association. It has stood beside its members in both joy and hardship — supporting families through medical and financial difficulty, helping with education, raising relief for those in need back home, and working to pass Sitakund's art, culture and heritage on to a new generation growing up in Britain. As our 7th-anniversary editorial put it: “Sitakund Samitee UK is not just the name of an organisation — it is a feeling, a platform.”

Our Roots

Discover Sitakund: A Hidden Gem of Beauty & Adventure

By Parvin Akther Sonia

Tucked into the southeastern hills of Bangladesh, Sitakund remains one of South Asia's best-kept secrets — a blend of nature, culture and spiritual depth, and a chance for young UK travellers to reconnect with their roots.

Tucked into the southeastern hills of Bangladesh, Sitakund remains one of South Asia's best-kept secrets. With its rich blend of nature, culture, and spiritual depth, this small town offers young travellers — especially those from the UK — a chance to step off the beaten path and into something truly special.

Where Nature Beckons

The towering Chandranath Hill is the region's natural showstopper. It's one of the highest points in Chattogram and a magnet for hikers. The climb, though challenging, rewards adventurers with sweeping views of green hills, forest canopy, and even the distant Bay of Bengal. Reaching the summit feels like walking through clouds.

Not far away, the Sitakund Eco Park offers a more tranquil way to connect with nature. Its leafy trails, cascading waterfalls, and birdsong create the perfect escape for walkers, photographers, and anyone needing a breath of fresh air.

Wild Waterfalls and Hidden Trails

For thrill-seekers, the journey to Khoiyachora Waterfall is unforgettable. This multi-tiered beauty lies deep in the forest and requires a spirited trek to reach. Once there, you'll find natural pools, quiet seclusion, and the kind of view that feels like a personal secret between you and the earth.

Sacred Sites and Spiritual Energy

Sitakund is also a place of deep spiritual heritage. Atop Chandranath Hill sits the Chandranath Temple, one of Bangladesh's oldest Hindu temples. Pilgrims gather here annually for the Shiva Chaturdashi festival, but even in quieter moments, the temple radiates a peaceful power that resonates with visitors from all backgrounds.

Adventure with Authenticity

Sitakund is raw, real, and refreshingly unpolished. It's sipping tea in clay cups, chatting with welcoming locals, and tasting fiery street food as the sun dips behind the hills. For British youth — particularly those with Bangladeshi roots — it's a journey into identity, nature, and connection.

Sitakund isn't just a destination — it's an experience. And it might just change how you see the world.

Heritage & Growth

Staying Connected to Sitakund: A Bridge Between Heritage & Growth

By Nazim Uddin · FCCA, FHEA, MBA, PGDE (Cambridge University)

Sitakund blends natural beauty, cultural richness and real economic potential. For second-generation immigrants, staying connected means both personal enrichment and a stake in the region's growth.

Sitakund, located in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh, is a region that embodies the perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and burgeoning economic potential. Often regarded as one of Bangladesh's hidden gems, Sitakund offers a remarkable combination of stunning landscapes, spiritual significance, and historical depth, making it an invaluable link to one's roots. For second-generation immigrants, staying connected to Sitakund provides both personal enrichment and the opportunity to actively participate in the region's ongoing growth and development.

A Hub of Business and Innovation

Bangladesh has witnessed a surge in global corporate presence, with multinational giants such as Unilever, GlaxoSmithKline, Reckitt Benckiser, and HSBC establishing their offices in the country. This speaks volumes about Bangladesh's potential as a burgeoning hub for business and innovation. Sitakund, strategically located near Chittagong, is central to this growth. By maintaining connections with Sitakund, second-generation immigrants can help foster networks that contribute to the economic prosperity of the region, while also benefiting from emerging opportunities that arise from its expanding industries.

Economic Vitality: A Centre of Industrial Strength

Sitakund is home to one of the world's largest ship-breaking industries, a critical part of the global supply chain for recyclable steel. This, in conjunction with large steel and re-rolling mills, positions Sitakund as a crucial player in Bangladesh's industrial landscape. The region's industrial complex, which includes vast manufacturing and processing hubs, drives the national economy. Additionally, Sitakund's strategic location as a logistics and transport hub further enhances its economic importance, making it an ideal base for businesses and trade.

Spiritual and Cultural Heritage

Beyond its economic growth, Sitakund is deeply rooted in spirituality and cultural heritage. The revered Chandranath Hill, one of the region's most significant religious sites, attracts thousands of devotees each year. This sacred hill, nestled within Sitakund's lush hills, not only serves as a beacon of faith but also represents the enduring cultural and spiritual ties that bind the local community together. Sitakund's cultural heritage, from its festivals to its traditions, offers a profound source of pride, and staying connected to this heritage provides second-generation immigrants with a continuous thread of cultural identity.

Enrichment Through Connection

For second-generation immigrants, maintaining ties with Sitakund is about more than nostalgia — it is about embracing the essence of what makes the region special. The connection to Sitakund offers a sense of belonging and an ongoing source of personal development. Its natural beauty, rich traditions, and spiritual significance provide a balanced perspective on life, where modernity and tradition coexist harmoniously.

By staying involved with Sitakund — whether through supporting local enterprises, nurturing educational opportunities, or investing in its cultural preservation — second-generation immigrants can contribute to the region's future prosperity. Sitakund is a region where heritage and growth intersect: a powerful link to both past and future. By maintaining ties, we ensure that its unique legacy benefits not only ourselves but also future generations, fostering a sense of pride, sustainability, and growth.

Community

Caring for Our Roots: A Commitment to Sitakund's Senior Citizens

By Md Rezaul Karim · NHS Surgeon, Barts Health NHS Trust, London

Many of Sitakund's elderly face growing health challenges with limited care. A data-driven, community-led initiative could change that — because caring for our elders is caring for our roots.

Health Status of Senior Citizens in Sitakund

Sitakund's senior citizens are facing growing health challenges, including hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and sensory impairments. Cognitive disorders such as dementia are also on the rise. Many elderly individuals are deprived of timely medical care due to financial hardship, limited healthcare infrastructure, and the deeply rooted belief that illness is an unavoidable part of aging. Mental health issues — particularly loneliness and depression — further affect their well-being.

Addressing these challenges demands collective effort. Families should offer consistent care and emotional support. Communities can raise awareness, organise health camps, and engage youth in volunteer programs. Local leaders must advocate for mobile clinics and age-friendly health policies that ensure dignity and access to care for all.

Proposed Role of Sitakund Samitee UK

The Sitakund Samitee UK proposes a data-driven, community-led initiative to support elderly healthcare. The first step is conducting a baseline survey to understand the specific needs of those aged 60 and above. Based on findings, a community health fund will be created to support medical check-ups, medications, physiotherapy, and emergency care. This fund will be supported by small, regular contributions from members and well-wishers.

Engaging Industry for Impact

Sitakund's industrial sector holds significant CSR potential. With proper coordination, the Samitee can engage industry leaders to support elderly care initiatives — ranging from mobile clinics to long-term health programs. By aligning CSR with real community needs, we can foster lasting impact.

Because caring for our elders is caring for our roots.

Sitakund — A Place Like No Other

By Nazim Uddin · FCCA, FHEA, MBA, PGDE (Cambridge) · Magazine 2022

From the holy Chandranath peak to the ship-breaking yards that feed the world's steel, Sitakund offers more to the world than almost any place its size — a tribute from our 2022 Obhishek O Milonmela magazine.

With a great deal of warmth and heartfelt congratulations I write this message of support for Sitakund Samity UK. The Sitakund Samity UK is playing a vital role in creating bonds between the Bangladeshi diaspora from Sitakund in the UK and Chittagong. Sitakund is a prominent gateway to Chittagong and plays an immense role in the geographic, economic, religious and tourism development of Bangladesh.

The Highest Hill in Chittagong

From a geological perspective, the loftiest Chandranath peak — with an altitude of 1,155 feet, part of the mighty Sitakund hill range — is the highest hill in Chittagong district. The marsh gas emitted from the shale, the saline springs and the sandy jungle-covered hills have attracted great interest from visitors and religious pilgrims, who meander through verdant plains interspersed with groves of bamboo and betel-nut palms, enjoying some very picturesque scenery.

A Holy Place

Sitakund's name is derived from its holiest past. Hindu tradition states that Rama and Sita, while in exile, roamed the hills in the vicinity, and that Sita bathed in the hot spring (kund). Beyond the Hindu sites, Chandranath peak is also regarded as a sacred site by local Buddhists, who revere the footprint of Buddha on a stone lying behind where a Buddhist temple once stood.

Where Mighty Ships Become Steel

Economically, Sitakund is not only a vibrant industrial corridor of Bangladesh — it is the place where the world's mightiest ships are recycled, paving the way for the strongest steel you can think of. The ship-breaking industry began in the 1960s, when the Greek ship MD Alpine was stranded on the shores of Sitakund after a severe cyclone. The ship remained there for several years before Chittagong Steel House bought the vessel and scrapped it.

Through Travellers' Eyes

Sitakund was visited by Sir Joseph Hooker, who left this account in his well-known Himalayan Journals: “Near Seetakoond a hill on the range, bearing the same name, rises 1,136 feet high. Fields of the poppy formed most beautiful crops… the poppy-fields resembled a carpet of dark-green velvet, sprinkled with white stars, or a green lake studded with waterlilies.” Modern-day travellers enjoy the eco park and waterfalls — in stark contrast to low-lying Bangladesh, Sitakund's waterfalls invite visitors out of the chaotic cities into serene surroundings where they can cool their feet in clear, cool water.

I am deeply grateful to Sitakund, as it has offered so much to fellow Bangladeshis. Those of you who know me — I am from Hathazari, a neighbouring upazila, and my parents-in-law are from Sitakund. I love the place: you would hardly find any other place which offers so much to the world. So to the beautiful people of Sitakund, please accept my sincere appreciation and best wishes for your Samity.

More articles — including Bengali essays on our journey and our hopes for Sitakund — will be added as each magazine is published.
